RECORDS OF BALLYNAHINCH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The records of the Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church and other records contain the following references to Palmers (other than the marriages and births listed elsewhere):

• Dec.3, 1701. Jane Palmer witnesses the marriage of Robert Smith and Margaret Kelly in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church.
• Jan.1, 1722. Adam Palmer, senior, of Magheradrool received 1 shilling and 1 pence in financial assistance from Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church.
• May 5, 1729. Widow Palmer of Magheradrool received 10 pence in financial assistance from Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church.
• 1740. Will of John Palmer of Magheratimpany was probated.
• 1829. Will of Adam Palmer of Ballymaglave was probated.
• 1852. Will of James Palmer of Drumgavelin dated 1852 and lodged 1855.
• 1863. From Griffith Valuation: Adam Palmer of Ballymacarn leases house and 10 acres from David S. Ker and leases house to Jane Allison. Also Anne Palmer of Ballymaglave South leased a house and 6 acres from David S. Ker. Also James Palmer of Ballymaglave South leased a house and 8 acres from David S. Ker. Also John Palmer of Ballymacarn South leased a house and 22 acres from David S. Ker.
• 1874. Robert Palmer, a single bootmaker from County Down aged 31, left London on Nov.2, 1874, aboard the ``Dilharree'' and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, on Jan.16, 1875.

The list of freeholders in the Barony of Ards, County Down, 1813-1821, contains the following Palmers:

• James Palmer registered a freehold worth more than 40 shillings in Ballyeasborough. The landlord was John Behlin, esq., and the tenure was given as the lives of Prince of Wales, Duke of York and John Palmer. Registered in Portaferry on Feb.6, 1817.
• John Palmer registered a freehold worth more than 40 shillings in Portavogie. The landlord was David Boyd and the tenure was given as the lives of Duke of Clarence, James Palmer and Robert Palmer. Registered in Greyabbey on Mar.17, 1818.

Also his son James Palmer of Portavogie who died the 13th of May 1857 aged 82 years. Also his grandson James Palmer of Portavogie who died the 25th of July 1857 aged 58 years. Erected by William Reid of Portavogie in memory of his son William who at the age of 22 was drowned with JAMES CATHCART & Robert PIPER when returning from the Green Isle where they had been fowling on the 3rd day of February 1831. Also his son Alexander who was drowned in Kingstown America on the 14th Oct. 1842 age 37. Also his wife Mary alias MILLER who died 29th April 1845 age 53. Also above William died 3rd. NEWTOWNARDS CHRONICLE, 1890

The following appeared in the Newtownards Chronicle in 1890:
Dec.13, 1890. On Thursday, District Inspector Winder and about 20 members of the Constabulary travelled from various stations in the Ards, proceeded to Portavogie -- to an eviction -- the parties evicted were two brothers named Palmer by their two sisters -- their father died without a will and the sons took possession of the farm.

• James Palmer, 21-year-old single farmer from Ballyhalbert arrived in New York on Mar.16, 1899, aboard the ``Teutonic'' from Liverpool. He was bound for his brother at 401 North 1st Street, Kansas City.
• James Palmer, 28-year-old single man born in County Down, arrived in New York on Dec.30, 1904, aboard the ``Pomeranian'' from Glasgow. He was bound for his brother, Samuel, at 401 North 1st Street, Kansas City. He had been in the US before in 1890 and 1902.
