Appendix 2C. Badger Family of Ballyeglish and USA

  1. William Badger, born about 1774, was probably the father of Nathaniel Badger born in 1799 in Ballyeglish, a townland which is less than a mile northeast of the village of Moneymore, County Derry. The Parish of Desertlyn and Ballyeglish includes Moneymore, a village which is just 5 miles south of the town of Magherafelt. Badger families have lived and worked in this region around Magherafelt and Moneymore since the plantation of Ulster. Family legend recalls that William was born in Glasgow, Scotland, though the US Census records for 1860 and 1870 record that Nathaniel's father was born in Ireland. A search of the Scottish records revealed very few Badgers. However, there are records in Ireland and a Roger Badger appears in a 1740 list for the Parish of Ardtrea, not far from Magherafelt. Magherafelt was founded by the Salter's Company and in 1797 a William Badger, who might be the same as the present ancestor, is recorded as a member of the Salter's Cavalry.

    3. Nathaniel Badger, born in 1799 in Ballyeglish, a townland which is less than a mile northeast of the village of Moneymore, County Derry. The Parish of Desertlyn and Ballyeglish includes Moneymore. Nathaniel was married twice. His first wife was named Sarah and is mentioned in the baptismal records of their children, Edward and Jane. In Edward's baptismal record of 1824 (in the Parish of Desertlyn and Ballyeglish) Nathaniel and Sarah Badger are listed as living in the townland of Ballymenagh just outside Moneymore. In Jane's baptismal record in the same parish they are listed as living in the townland of Magheradone. Nathaniel married his second wife, Sarah Clarke (or Clark, born in 1800, in Ballyeglish, Co.Derry) in 1827. Sarah was the daughter of Samuel and Florence Clarke (family legend says she came from Coagh), had a sister Isabelle Clarke who married Richard Robert Talbot (Richard and Isabelle had a son Robert Talbot) and another sibling who married a McIvor. The baptismal record for their first child, William, lists Nathaniel as a weaver, though most farms in those days also housed a weaving loom. The 1831 Census for the Ballyeglish includes a "Thanie" Badger, Presbyterian, with a family of 5 males and 3 females. Preceded by their son John in 1850, Nathaniel and Sarah and almost all of their family emigrated to the USA about 1853. Sarah died in Newton, Kansas, on Oct.1, 1878, and Nathaniel in the same city on Oct.9, 1887. They are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Nathaniel and Sarah's children:
