Map of Magherafelt/Moneymore area

This appendix delineates several Badger families which may be related but whose connection has not been established (in addition to those delineated in the appendices which follow).

James Badger of Magherafelt:

  1. James Badger must have been born about 1750. We note that a James Badger of the congregation of First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church was married to Agnes Willie of the same congregation on Dec.11, 1774. James Badger, born about 1750, had children:
    1. Nathaniel Badger, son of Jorge (James?) Badger, was baptized in First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church on Jun.22, 1773.
    2. James Badger, son of James Badger, was baptized in First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church on Apr.25, 1779.

Nancy Badger of Antrim:

  1. Nancy Badger, born about 1755, was married in Antrim about 1781 (probably in a Presbyterian Church) to John Boon born in Antrim in 1753. They emigrated to the US before 1788 and has nine childrent. Ed Schreiber of Pittsburgh, PA, (edandmarie@verizon.net) has traced the family of John and Nancy Boon.

John Badger Family of Megargy:

  1. John Badger of Megargy must have been born about 1790. He could have been the son of the above James Badger. He had children:
    1. James Badger, son of John Badger of Megargy, was baptized in First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church on Sep.27, 1813.
    2. John Badger, son of John Badger of Megargy, was baptized in First Magherafelt Presbyterian Church on Dec.6, 1815.

    4. William Badger, born to John Badger of Megargy, was baptized in First Presbyterian Church, Magherafelt, on Jun.15, 1820. This may be the William Badger of Ballygruby.

Robert Badger Family of Castledawson:

  1. Robert Badger of ???? must have been born about 1810. He married Jane Badger (same name) in Castledawson Presbyterian Church on Jun.20, 1831. Robert and Jane (or Jean) Badger had children:
    1. Margaret Badger, daughter of Robert and Jean Badger, was baptised in Castledawson Presbyterian Church in 1835.
    2. George Badger was born in Curran on May 25, 1837, and baptised in Castledawson Presbyterian Church on Jul. 25, 1837. He was a shoemaker by trade and moved to Ayrshire, Scotland, after the 1851 census and before Feb.1858 when he married a Scottish girl, Mary Muir.

William Badger Family of Ballygruby, Moneymore:

  1. William Badger may have been born about 1800. It is likely he married a woman named Mary since that name was given to two older granddaughters. William is only known to us as the father of:
    1. William Badger was born in Co.Derry about 1828. The Griffith valuation of the 1858/59 records that William Badger held land in Ballygruby, Artrea Parish, Co. Derry. Ballygruby is about one mile due east of the town of Moneymore in County Derry. On Feb.15, 1870, in the Ballinderry Church of Ireland, William Badger, full age, bachelor, farmer of Ballygrooby (father: William Badger, farmer) was married to Jane McGuckian, full age, spinster of Ballydonnell, parish of Ballinderry (father: William McGuckian, farmer). Richard McGuckian and Rolland Cummings were witnesses. William was about 42 at the time of the marriage. In the 1901 Census, William Badger is listed as a 72-year-old Presbyterian farmer (born in Co.Derry) and widower living at house #21 in Ballygruby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. Living with him are his three unmarried children listed below. Jane must have died prior to the 1901 Census. William must have died between the 1901 and 1911 Censuses. Daughter Jane Badger of Ballygruby, Moneymore, signed the Ulster Covenant in the Saltersland Church on Sep.28, 1912. The children of William and Jane Badger:
      1. Mary Ann Badger was born on Dec.15, 1870, and is recorded in the records of the Second Moneymore Presbyterian Church. She is listed in the 1901 Census as a 28-year-old unmarried dressmaker born in Co.Derry living with her father in house #21 in Ballygruby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 35-year-old unmarried Presbyterian dressmaker born in Co.Derry living in Ballygraby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. Mary Ann Badger of Ballygrooley, Moneymore signed the Ulster Covenant in the Saltersland Church on Sep.28, 1912.
      2. William George Badger was born on Nov.18, 1872, and is recorded in the records of the Second Moneymore Presbyterian Church. He must have left home or died before the 1901 Census.
      3. Thomas Badger was born on May 5, 1874, and is recorded in the records of the Second Moneymore Presbyterian Church. He is listed in the 1901 Census as a 25-year-old unmarried farmer born in Co.Derry living with his father in house #21 in Ballygruby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. In the 1911 Census he is listed as a 31-year-old unmarried Presbyterian farmer born in Co.Derry living in Ballygraby, Moneymore, Co.Derry.
      4. Jane Badger was born on Feb.13, 1881, in Ballygruby. She is listed in the 1901 Census as an unmarried 16-year-old born in Co.Derry living with her father in house #21 in Ballygruby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. In the 1911 Census she is listed as an unmarried 25-year-old born in Co.Derry living in Ballygraby, Moneymore, Co.Derry. Jane Badger of Ballygruby, Moneymore, signed the Ulster Covenant in the Saltersland Church on Sep.28, 1912.
    2. John Badger was the son of William Badger and may have been born about 1830. John was married twice. We suspect that his first wife was Ann Huston and that he married her in Maghera Church of Ireland on May 10, 1853. John and Ann (Huston) Badger had a daughter, Ann, who was christened in Moneymore Second Presbyterian Church on Sep.17, 1854. Ann may have died in childbirth or at least prior to 1857. On Feb.24, 1857, in Molesworth Third Presbyterian Church, Cookstown, John Badger, full age, widower, grocer of Moneymore (father: William Badger, farmer) was married to Jane Crooks, full age, spinster, of Ballymenagh, parish of Derryloran (father: William Crooks, farmer). William Badger of Ballygrooby and James Anderson of Ballygrooby were witnesses. John and Jane Badger were living in Moneymore during the period 1858-71. This may be the John Badger of Bridger Street, Moneymore, Co. Derry, who is included in the Griffith Valuation of 1858-59. The children of John Badger of Moneymore:
      1. Ann Badger, daughter of John and Ann (Huston) Badger of Moneymore, was christened in Moneymore Second Presbyterian Church on Sep.17, 1854.

      8. Thomas Badger, son of John and Jane (Crooks) Badger of Moneymore, was born in Moneymore on Feb.25, 1871.
      9. George Badger, son of John and Jane (Crooks) Badger of Moneymore, was born in Moneymore on Nov.28, 1873.

Badger Family of Ballymoghan, Magherafelt, Co. Derry:

A Badger family occupied land in the townland of Gortagilly in the mid 1800s. Gortagilly is about 1.5 miles northeast of the town of Moneymore in County Derry. Ballymoghan and Ballymoghan House are about 1.5 miles southwest from Magherafelt near the road to Moneymore.

  1. ?? Badger was born in the early 1800s. He married Eliza Kidd (born about 1820) and died before 1844. The Griffith valuation of the 1860s records that Eliza Badger, by then a widow, held land in Gortagilly, Desertlyn Parish, Co. Derry. In the 1901 Census, the 80-year-old widow, Eliza Badger (a retired grocer born in Co.Derry), is listed as living in house #4, Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, Co.Derry, with her son, James Badger and his family. The children of ?? and Eliza Badger:
    1. James Badger was born to the widow, Eliza (Kidd) Badger, and was christened in Moneymore Second Presbyterian Church on Oct.16, 1844. This is probably the James Badger who married Mary Jane Cousley (born in County Derry about 1860) in Castledawson Presbyterian Church on Nov.10, 1880. In the 1901 Census, James and Mary Jane Badger, are listed as a 56-year-old Presbyterian farmer and grocer (born in Co.Derry) and his 40-year-old wife Mary Jane living at house #4 in Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, Co.Derry. Living with them are James's 80-year-old widowed mother, Eliza Badger (a retired grocer born in Co.Derry), four children listed below and an unmarried farm servant, 23-year-old Robert James Colvin (born in County Derry). James Badger of Gortagilly, farmer and grocer, died on Sep.19, 1904, leaving his estate to his son, Samuel J. Badger, farmer, and his wife, Mary J. Badger. Mary Badger is listed in the 1911 Census as a 50-year-old Presbyterian widow living in #8 Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, County Derry, with her son, Samuel Badger and his wife, Lizzie Badger. James and Mary Jane Badger's children:
      1. Samuel John Badger was born about 1891 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 19-year-old Presbyterian grocer (born in Co.Derry) living with his parents at house #4 in Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, Co.Derry. He is listed in the 1911 Census as a 29-year-old Presbyterian grocer and farmer (born in Co.Derry). On Jan.24, 1911, Samuel John Badger, full age, bachelor, farmer and merchant of Gortagilly (father: James Badger, deceased, farmer and merchant) was married to Elizabeth Badger (?his cousin?), full age, spinster of Bally?forly? (father: William Badger, deceased, farmer) in Lecumpher Presbyterian Church, Desertmartin. They are listed in the 1911 Census as 29-year-old Presbyterian grocer and farmer, Samuel Badger and his 30-year-old wife, Lizzie Badger, living at #8, Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, County Derry with Samuel's mother Mary Badger (see above) and two servants, 23-year-old Anglican unmarried farm servant, Thomas Wilson (born in Co.Derry) and 24-year-old Anglican unmarried general servant, Maggie Love (born in Co.Derry). Samuel J. Badger and Lizzie Badger of Gortalilly, Moneymore, signed the Ulster Covenant in Moneymore on Sep.28, 1912. Samuel John Badger of Gortagilly, farmer, died on May 6, 1939, leaving his estate (effects 1866 10s) to his wife, Eliza Badger. Children of Samuel and Lizzie Badger:
        1. Anna Mary Badger was born on May 28, 1914, in Gortagilly, Moneymore. She is listed in the Rainey Endowed School register for 1928, her residence being given as Gortagilly and her father as Samuel Badger. We think this is the Mary (Molly) Badger, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Badger of Gortagilly, Moneymore, who died on May 25, 2012, at Corkhill Lodge Care Center and is buried in the graveyard at St. John's Parish Church, Moneymore.
        2. Sarah Ina Badger was born on Feb.2, 1917, in Gortagilly, Moneymore. She is listed in the Rainey Endowed School register for 1931, her residence being given as Gortagilly and her father as Samuel Badger.

On Feb.1, 1907, Elizabeth Ann Badger, full-age, spinster, of Gortagilly (father: James Badger, merchant) was married in Ballygoney Presbyterian Church, Arboe, to Hugh Thompson, full-age, bachelor, merchant of Magherafelt (father: William Thompson, merchant). Her sister, Sarah J. Badger was a witness. In the 1911 Census, 40-year-old grocer and baker Hugh Thompson and his wife Elizabeth are living in house #23, Queen Street, Magherafelt with their children listed below:
        1. William Thompson was born about 1908 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 3-year-old living with his parents in Queen Street, Magherafelt.

      4. Sara Jane Badger was born about 1896 and is listed in the 1901 Census as an 14-year-old schoolgirl (born in Co.Derry) living with her parents at house #4 in Gortagilly, Ballymoghan, Co.Derry.
